WIP #2 Tula Pink 100 Modern Blocks City Sampler Sew Along

Last summer, Sew Sweetness announced the Tula Pink’s 100 Modern Blocks City Sampler Sew Along.  I already had  Tula Pink’s book, and plenty of her fabric.  I have hoarded a precious stash of Tula Pink fabric.  It was time to cute into my collection of Tula’s Birds and the Bees line.

I’ve been a Tula Pink fan since I started quilting.  Her artistic ability amazes me.  I can’t draw and have always been amazed by the skill of others.  I was fortunate enough to meet her at her mother’s quilt shop in Stewartsville, MO.

It was a total random coincidence.  My husband and I were going to Kansas City for a long weekend.  We stopped at The Quilt Shoppe due to a billboard on 35W.  As I wandered around the store, one of the staff walked up and asked if I had any questions.  I wanted to purchase one of the Parisville Kiss Kiss quilt kits.  I was asking about the backing and was informed that her sample had a custom backing.  Um, her sample?  Yep, it was Tula!!  She worked a couple days a week at her mom’s quilt shop.  I am so glad that I was able to experience The Quilt Shoppe before it closed.

I had a month before school started up again, so I needed to get as many done as possible.  The City Sampler Sew Along was a few blocks a week, but I knew that would be difficult one I started teaching again.

Here are a few of my favorite blocks:

Tula Pink gave a shout out on her blog about the 100 Modern Quilt Block Quilt Along hosted by Sew Sweetness, Jaybird Quilts, Crazy Old Ladies, and Gina Pina.  She posted a collage on her blog about the sew along.

Her collage has 28 of my blocks in it!!  The top row is made up of my blocks!

The City Sampler Sew Along ends January 31st.  I am using all 100 Blocks in the Gridlock option.  I have all of the blocks done,  rows 1 & 2 put together, and have started sashing the rest of the rows.  I am hoping to get a row or 2 together each night after work.  If you would like to see my blocks, they are available for viewing through my Flickr account.

The Grand Prize is having Angela Walters of Quilting Is My Therapy quilt the winning quilt.  How exciting is that!

Will keep posting updates as they occur.  Off to finish row 3 tonight before bed!

I am linking to WIP Wednesday hosted by Lee at Freshly Pieced.  Thanks to Intrepid Thread for sponsoring this week’s WIP Wednesday!

It’s always fun to meet some of the “greats” whether before or after they are famous. And super fun to be surprised in a shop. And cheers on the showing of your blocks.

I got the Tula Pink book before Christmas and also a big ‘ol roll of her Acacia fabric. Can’t wait to cut into it. I love your blocks. I think I’m going to do like you did and mix some solids in with the prints. Your quilt is going to look awesome once finished. Good luck on getting it done and I hope you win!
